Couples retreat: Riviera Maya
My Couples' Retreat Review of Grand Palladium Colonial
Yes, even travel agents need a break! When it’s time to truly switch off, my partner and I head straight to the Riviera Maya, Mexico. Think lush jungle, powder-white sand, and direct flights from Glasgow - what's not to love?
We recently checked into the massive, yet somehow secluded, Grand Palladium Colonial Resort & Spa. Here’s why this sprawling giant was the perfect spot for quality couples' time.
The Hidden Paradise (The Vibe)
Just a 40-minute drive from Cancun, this resort is "Grand" in every sense. It sprawls across 300 stunning acres, shared with its sister resorts (Kantenah and White Sands), and yes, regular golf carts ferry you between them!
We adored the Spanish Colonial style and the beautifully lit wooden walkways. But the true stars? The locals! Flamingos, curious coatis, sunbathing iguanas, and even monkeys swinging overhead. It feels less like a hotel and more like a nature reserve putting on a private show.
Dreaming of 'I Do' (or ‘I still do’)
Tucked away on the grounds is a picture-perfect chapel. Perfect for weddings or that romantic vow renewal!
The Room
We booked a Junior Suite with a balcony overlooking the lush jungle. It was quiet, immaculate, and blissfully far from the main hustle. Combined with the super comfy bed, we were set up perfectly for deep, restorative sleep after a full day of... eating, drinking, and sunbathing.
Tip: If you need maximum chill, request a non-ground floor room to help mitigate any humidity issues.
Culinary Adventures (And Those Waffles!)
With 14 restaurants on-site, we didn't go hungry. The quality was consistently high, but two spots stood out:
Sumptuori Tepanyaki: An absolute must for the show-cooking entertainment and delicious food.
Poseidon (Our Favourite): This beachfront seafood spot was divine. Seriously - dining with your toes in the sand, the waves gently crashing, and the sky turning shades of pink and gold? A moment we wanted to bottle forever.
I also have to confess: I don't even like waffles, but the fresh-made breakfast waffles with dulce de leche at the buffet made me a convert. Seconds? Maybe thirds. Don't judge.
Tip: Avoid the breakfast buffet's peak times (usually around 9-10 AM) for a more relaxed start to your day.
The Secret to Our Relaxation: El Secreto
Out of the seven pools across the resort, we couldn't drag ourselves away from El Secreto - the "secret" adult pool.
This was the ultimate highlight of our couples' retreat. It's blissfully quiet (ninos-free!), featuring sunken loungers, a jacuzzi, and Bali beds. The best part? It turns into a chilled bar at night and stays open until midnight. We often finished our day with a quiet, humid evening dip. Pure perfection.
Sand, Surf, and Spa
The beach is exactly what you imagine: powder-white sand and warm, clear turquoise waters. We loved the snorkelling right off the shore - we spotted stingrays and silverfish in waist-high water!
When we needed true indulgence, we visited the Zentropia Spa. This serene oasis, set amidst lush grounds, boasts an incredible hydro experience, including its own lazy river! A true pampering session.
Beach Tip: Pack swim shoes; the sea floor can be a little rocky in spots.
Spa Tip: Always ask about unadvertised special deals or packages at the spa desk!
Conclusion: It Ticked Every Box
The Grand Palladium Colonial is certainly family-friendly, but the resort’s sheer size and its amazing facilities - especially the existence of El Secreto - meant we easily got exactly what we came for: an indulgent and relaxing couples' retreat.
From quiet moments on our balcony to sunset dinners by the sea, it gave us the chance to slow down, reconnect, and just enjoy being together.
We’ll absolutely be back. And who knows - next time, we might even bring the teenagers. Paradise is best shared... even if it comes with attitude.
